Submission Guidelines

A Near Run Thing is now open to submissions until June 5th, 2011. Depending on the number of submissions, we will publish our first edition in late summer, 2011. Following this, our journal will be published thrice-yearly.
At this time, A Near Run Thing is a non-paying market. However, we encourage authors to consider the service in broadening knowledge on this often-overlooked period.
Please do not send simultaneous submissions. However, we will accept reprints of works.
Regarding rights, our journal asks for exclusive web rights for six months. Works will also be archived unless the author requests otherwise.
Submission Guidelines
All works must deal with the Napoleonic or French Revolutionary Eras. For instance, works may take place between 1789-21, examine the legacy of events of those times, provide an alternative, speculative history of those events, or otherwise link the Napoleonic and French Revolutionary Eras to their piece. Furthermore, the connections to these eras may arise from any region geographically. Thus, the events in America leading to the War of 1812, the British conquest of the Raj, French/British naval encounters in the Pacific, and other geographically diverse pieces are accepted; the events of submitted works need not all occur in Europe.
Works of short fiction must be less than 8000 words in length. Characters should be the driving force behind the events portrayed, and thus, we will give special consideration to pieces that invoke deep, personal connections with the age displayed.
Poetry will also be accepted, but it should have a recognizable connection to the era. Consider Alfred Noyes' "The Highwayman" as a fine example of such a work. As each edition of the journal will only publish a few poems, please send your best.
Nonfiction must be deeply rooted in research, engaging and narrative in style, and must adhere to the fiction category's word limit.
Artwork will also be accepted, but as with all categories, it must provide a link to the Napoleonic/French Revolutionary Eras.
The rights to all works submitted should owned by the submitter.
How to Submit
Again, please note that A Near Run Thing is open for submission until June 5th, 2011. After this, we will reopen in the late summer/early fall.
To submit your work, please send written work in a .doc Word document of pasted into the body of the email. For artwork, please submit in .jpeg format.
Send all work to: nearrunthing@hotmail.com
We will consider all work and return a notice to all authors/artists within two weeks. This notice will either be for rejection or notice that your work is being further considered. Submitters who offer works that warrant further consideration will be notified of rejection/acceptance within one month of their original submission date.
Thank you,
Michael Seeley

About the Journal

Dear Friends,

Welcome to A Near Run Thing, a literary journal of historical fiction. Throughout history, few men have come to define their eras. One of these few is undoubtedly Napoleon Bonaparte. Within his era, rightly labeled the Napoleonic Age, one can easily become enchanted with the countless stories present. As such, A Near Run Thing seeks to continue that tradition. Our journal publishes fine works that examine both the Napoleonic and the French Revolutionary eras. Please see our submission guidelines for more information. On another note, our name is derived from a quote by the Duke of Wellington, who described the battle of Waterloo as "a near run thing."
A Near Run Thing is edited by Michael Seeley, an historical fiction author and Napoleonic scholar.
